It all started, in fact, in an Asian bistro in Berlin.
Hiền was visiting Europe and visited a small Asian restaurant where she noticed the wide variety of Asian dishes on offer.
This simple event made her reflect on the numerous clichés that were related to Asians. She realised that many of them are closely linked to food. It was then that Hiền started a visual investigation to find out the implications of this and how this perception directly affects her own identity as a Vietnamese woman.
Noodles, tofu, seafood, seaweed or soy sauce are considered “typically” Asian ingredients. They quickly became an essential motif in her staged images along with colourful fabrics and objects such as vases or figurines that are also considered Asian by western cultures.
